African Football President Banned For 5 Years By FIFA

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Ahmad Ahmad has been banned from all football related activity for 5 years for abuse of position.

FIFA said its ethics committee found Ahmad breached codes relating to duty of loyalty, offering and accepting gifts, and abuse of position as well as misappropriation of funds.

He was also fined $220,000 and ordered to pay within 30 days.

Ahmad had been under investigations since 2017 after former CAF’s secretary general Amr Fahmy sent FIFA’s ethics committee a document listing allegations of financial irregularities and sexual harassment.

The CAF boss had previously denied the accusations stating he had no control over finances at the confederation.

The ban comes at a time when the 60-year-old Madagascan official was about to start the campaign to be re-elected for four more years as the head of African football.

Ahmad was elected in March 2017 after defeating long-serving president Issa Hayatou, who had been in office for 29 years.

He stood for the presidency then on a platform promising administrative reform, financial transparency and a potential competitions reorganization.
