Equatorial Guinea Coach Lopez Steps Downs

Angel Lopez Perez has announced that he has stepped down from his position as head coach of Equatorial Guinea.

Lopez handed in his resignation letter to his bosses, the Equatoguinean Football Federation (FEGUIFUT) on Friday.

The 36-year-old took over the Nzalang National in September 2018 and his shocking resignation came weeks after qualifying the central African country to the 2022 World Cup qualifiers for Africa.

“After an intense season and a wonderful year, I have reached an agreement with the Equatorial Guinean Football Federation and will not continue as head coach of the national team,” he said in a statement despatched to Ducor Sports.

“I’m looking for a new challenge, nothing else,” he added.

Meanwhile, Equatorial Guinea’s head of state, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has released a voluntary provision following, for the first time, the qualification of the Nzalang national men’s team in the group phases for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, and the qualifying rounds for the African Cup of Nations, in 2021.

The cheque, amounting CFA 200 million, was presented to FEGUIFUT by the Secretary of State to the Presidency of the Republic, Charged with Missions, Salvador Ndong Nsue Mangue, on behalf of the head of state.

In his speech, Mangue expressed hope that the funds would allow the National team of Equatorial Guinea to obtain positive results in the two competitions.
