Exclusive: Cameroon Star Retires From International Football

Cameroon defender Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik has announced his retirement from international football.

The 30-year-old announced his decision on Saturday, having had a few months to reflect on the country’s Africa Cup of Nations campaigns.

Cameroon went to Egypt as champions of the continent having beaten Egypt to win their fifth trophy in 2017 in Gabon, but they were eliminated by neighbours Nigeria in the round-of-16 stage, after a 3-2 loss.

“I have experienced some of the best moments of my life wearing the Indomitable Lions shirt and have memories with me that will last a lifetime,” he said.

“However, I feel that now is the right time to step away in order to allow the next generation the opportunity to step up and to flourish.”

“Thank you for the memories and good luck to the team for the future.”

Jean-Armel played six times for his fatherland’s homeland, scoring one goal since making his debut in 2012.

He had previously represented France up to the under-21 level while coming through the ranks at Le Harve.

Born in France, Kana-Biyik is the son of former Cameroon international Adre Kana- Biyik who was a defender at Metz and Le Havre in the ‘90s.

In July, Jean-Armel left his Turkish side first-tier side, Kayserispor after a 3-year stint with the club, and crossed to rivals Gazişehir Gaziantep.
