Thousands of mourners from sebei region turned up to send off Uganda’s athlete Alex Cherop

Thousands of mourners from sebei region , athletes from the Uganda police Force, Uganda prisons and Uganda people’s Defense Forces turned up to witness the sendoff of Uganda’s athlete Alex Cherop.

The deceased was stabbed with a traditional iron knife on the back of his neck by his friend on Thursday night last week in his village kaworyo, kween district after a little misunderstanding. His friend who did the act is now at kapchorwa and expected to appear before court this week.

The local community in Kaworyo village described the late as someone who had love for mentoring young talent in athletics, adding that his killer is among those he was helping to bring up in the sport.

According to Daily Monitor the inspector General of Police of Uganda, Kale Kayihura praised the fallen athlete and promising young officer for his service to Uganda police.

“By his death, the family members, the police and country at large have robbed of a promising and disciplined officer and sportsman, whose hard work, dedicated service, sports talents and contribution towards the development of Uganda police force will greatly be missed, ”the inspector General of polices’ condolence message that was delivered by commissioner Denis Odwong Odongpiny.

Alex Cherop Kapcheromit was stabbed by his friend on Thursday night last week in his village Kaworyo. A friend felt short-changed by his colleague Cherop, and turned his frustration into bitterness and decided to stab him with a traditional knife on the back of his neck. Daily Monitor states.

An eye witness, Isaac Bongin, who is also an athlete and was in their company said, Chelimo could have been angered by a simple misunderstanding with the deceased earlier before they went home .According to Daily Monitor.

Alex Cherop has been a star in the inter-forces 10km race with many local and international appearances in the past. Cherop recently appeared in India where he came third in the world 10km race.

Deceased is the second athlete to die in Kween district under unclear circumstances. The first was Peter Chelangat who was shot dead by his sister’s husband on 13th December last year.
