NIGERIAN LEAGUE: Rivers United Closes Gap On Leaders Lobi

Current Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) headline-makers Lobi Stars’ lead has been sliced to bits following Rivers United’s win over the weekend.

Godwin Uwa’s side were scheduled to play last season’s vice champions Mountain of Fire and Miracles (MFM) yesterday but the tie was called off.

Victory would have seen the 1999 premier league winners stretch their lead at the summit to seven points. But with the game rescheduled, it has allowed Port Harcout-based Rivers United to close in on the Ortom Boys with just four points separating the two sides now.

A lone goal win over Nasarawa United did the trick for Rivers, however, they have Kano Pillars breathing down their necks who also had their match-day 17 fixture with sixth-placed Akwa United put off until later.

Elsewhere, Abia Warriors and fourth-place occupants Katsina United slugged out a 1-1 stalemate with two-time Nigerian Cup champions El Kanemi Warriors registering the biggest win of the weekend, as they worsened bottom-placed Heartland’s miserable run, pounding them three unanswered goals.

Sunshine Stars also swaggered over Wikki Tourists by a slender 2-1 margin as Enugu Rangers and Kwara United settled on a goalless affair.

Go Round and Niger Tornadoes wrapped up their tussle on a one-all draw.
