I Am My Father’s Son: A look at Emerging Youngsters Emulating Their Father’s Stardom on the Pitch

Being born to a decorated and famous sports personality is in itself a great thing of pride, save for the pressure that comes with taking the same career path as the parent(s). The pressure to live up to the name can be overwhelming. For example, the Ayew brothers are still living in their father’s shadow, years after becoming professional footballers! We take a look at some of the youngsters who have taken on their fathers’ mantle and see how they are faring.

 

Timothy Weah (PSG)

Timothy Weah has taken to his father – George Weah’s first career as a footballer even though he is currently the first son of Liberia.
Former Ballon d’Or winner George Weah left a legacy that has seen fans compare his contributions to those of his son, Timothy. Born in New York, USA, the youngster moved through the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) academy and recently signed a professional contract with the club.
Timothy scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut against Ludogorets, giving us a glimpse of what he has in store in future.

 

Isaac Drogba (GUINGAMP)

Isaac Drogba, son to Chelsea and Ivory Coast legend Didier Drogba also followed his father’s footsteps and was recently presented by Ligue1 club, Guingamp, 16 years after his father signed for them!
The 17-year-old was in the Chelsea academy, and his move into Guingamp’s Under-19 academy side is a step towards matching his father’s achievements. Drogba, after the unveiling of his son took to instagram and said, “Couldn’t be more proud of you Isaac Drogba.”

 

Sean Chukwudi Kanu (WATFORD)

Kanu Nwankwo’s son, Sean has been making headlines as a prolific goal scorer. He was signed by the Watford academy in 2013 and he also plays for his school, St John’s Prep and Senior School football team.
He once helped his team win the under-11 English Schools Football Association Enfield Borough Football Tournament. His team won the competition with 7 goals, four of which were scored by Sean.

With these youngsters having an ingrained background of success, it will remain to be seen if they use all the tools at their disposal to go on and emulate or even better the successful careers of their fathers.
