Embattled Coach Could Leave Kaizer Chiefs as Contract Nears End

Stephen Komphela’s days as gaffer of South African Premier Soccer League club Kaizer Chiefs could be numbered with his contract on the brink of expiration. The 50-year-old’s current deal with the Johannesburg outfit runs down at end of this June.

His three-year time at the FNB Stadium hasn’t been a successful one with Chiefs still to win a title under his reign. The 3-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates weeks ago, is being seen as the last straw with many believing his contract wouldn’t be renewed at its expiration.

Though he managed to enhance Chiefs’ image following the Soweto Derby with a win over Stellenbosch in the Cup competition, it has done little to deflect growing resentment toward him. Already, there have been incessant calls from supporters and former club players demanding his immediate resignation.

With seven games to the end of the Premier Soccer League, Chiefs have only the South African Cup to fight for making his position all the more untenable.
