In what was the replay of last year’s PSA World championships final where El Welily walked away victorious, the world No.1 was not ready to give away the title this time as she cruised to a comfortable 3-0 sweep and etched her name in the record books by becoming the first female athlete in any sport to win a professional tournament staged in Saudi Arabia.
“I felt I was in control but at no time it was easy, even though I was ahead in the score, she was always coming back. After losing the WORLD Championships final, this match and this victory means a lot to me,” El Sherbini said.
The tournament was the first of its kind as it was the first professional women’s squash tournament to take place in Saudi Arabia.
“This was an incredibly important tournament,” she added.
