Cricket: Uganda Wins the 2018 ICC Women’s World T20 Africa Qualifier

Uganda won the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Africa Qualifiers after beating Zimbabwe by 3 wickets at Affies Park, Windhoek, on Saturday. Uganda posted 100/7 in their 20 overs, while Zimbabwe mustered 99/7 in reply.

Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat scoring 99/7, while Uganda reached the winning target with seven wickets down and three balls to spare.

Candiru was Uganda’s best bowler, taking 3/14, while Carol Namugenyi and Rita Musamali each picked up a wicket. She came to Uganda’s rescue with fine innings despite losing partners at regular intervals. It was until Nampiina joined her that things started to look bright for Uganda.

The pair put on 30 runs for the seventh wicket and Chandiru summed it up by hitting the winning run with three balls to spare. It was no surprise that she won the player of the match award since she remained not out on 23 off 23 balls. She also took player and bowler of the tournament for her exceptional performance- 15 wickets at an average of 7 and 105 runs.

Uganda will be going to the final qualifying tournament for the 2018 ICC Women’s World Twenty20.
