Nigeria Prepares for Title Defense

It was a memorable 2015 campaign for the D’Tigers after winning the African Basketball Championships (Afro Basket) for the first time in Radès, Tunisia against all-time highest title holders Angola, by 74-65 points.

The West African nation is preparing to defend its title in the 29th edition of the continental competition that will be co-hosted by Tunisia and Senegal from September 8-16.

Nigeria is expected to commence preparation on Friday, August 12 following the appointment of new coach, US-based Nigerian, Alex Nwora who will guide the No. 6-ranked team through this year’s edition of the tournament.

The tournament also serves to qualify teams for the quadrennial FIBA World Cup and the Summer Olympic Games.

The defending champions are in Group A alongside DR Congo, Mali and Ivory Coast.

Group A: Nigeria, D.R. Congo, Mali, Ivory Coast

Group B: Angola, Central African Republic, Morocco, Uganda

Group C: Tunisia, Guinea, Rwanda, Cameroon

Group D: Senegal, Mozambique, Egypt, South Africa
